What is TMS?
TMS or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is non-invasive, FDA-approved treatment used primarily for managing mental health conditions, such as major depressive disorder (MDD). It involves using magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in specific areas of the brain associated with mood regulation and cognitive function often leading to complete remission from depression.
When people are considering TMS, it usually means they’ve tried other methods that have failed. Most have tried many different medications spanning their entire adult lives without success. Some may have just given up hope that there may be a way out of depression. That’s why Lakeside TMS is dedicated to giving these patients another option.
Why Deep TMS from Lakeside?
Lakeside uses specialized deep TMS technology from Brainsway
Deeper Brain Stimulation: Deep TMS penetrates deeper layers of the brain, allowing for more extensive stimulation of neural circuits that are often associated with mood regulation and other cognitive functions.
H-Coil Technology: Deep TMS uses specialized H-coil technology, which is designed to target and stimulate broader and deeper brain structures than the figure-8 coils used in traditional TMS.
In real-life community treatment settings, 20 sessions of Deep TMS produce remission rates even higher than those observed in clinical trials. Among patients who went on to complete a treatment course of 30 sessions, 75% had a response to treatment and 1 in 2 achieved full remission.
What is a session like?
A TMS session typically lasts about 20-40 minutes and involves the patient sitting comfortably in a chair while a specialized electromagnetic coil is placed against their scalp, usually near the forehead. The coil sends magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the brain regions associated with mood regulation. Patients might hear clicking sounds and feel a tapping sensation on their head during the treatment. There is no need for anesthesia, and patients can return to their regular activities immediately after the session, as TMS is noninvasive and generally well-tolerated with minimal side effects.
Is TMS the same as electroschock therapy?
TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) is not the same as electroshock therapy (ECT). TMS uses magnetic pulses to non-invasively stimulate specific brain regions without inducing a seizure and does not require anesthesia, with minimal side effects like mild headaches. In contrast, ECT uses electrical currents to induce a controlled seizure, requires general anesthesia, and can result in more significant side effects, such as memory loss and confusion. While both are used to treat severe depression, TMS is a gentler, outpatient option, whereas ECT is reserved for more severe or treatment-resistant cases.
Will my insurance cover it?
TMS therapy is covered by most major insurances including commercial insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, and Tricare. Lakeside Behavioral Health will reach out to your insurance company on your behalf to obtain Prior-Authorization and a benefits estimation so you know what to expect before getting started.
